We provide free and confidential support, advocacy, prevention, and educational programs.

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence can be in the form of emotional, financial, verbal, physical abuse or manipulative behaviors used by a person in a relationship to gain power and control over the other. 
Domestic violence is a crime.
Partners may/may not be married, dating, separated, in an open relationship, living together, in a same sex relationship, family, or caregivers.

Domestic Violence Services

We offer the following free and confidential services. 

Counseling, Support and Advocacy

Individual and group support for people experiencing domestic violence, teen dating violence, and children who have witnessed domestic violence.

​Civilian advocacy within 18 police departments in Plymouth county. Providing victim contact and support, risk assessment, safety planning, information, resources, and referrals.

​We also offer for our clients access to our food pantry and clothing closet. As well as information and referrals to community based programs.

SAFEPLAN Court Advocacy

SAFEPLAN is MOVA’s statewide, court based program that provides specially trained and certified advocates to help survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking who are seeking protection from abuse.

SAFEPLAN advocates assist individuals in filing 209A restraining orders, 258E harrassment orders, and help explain the court, police, and legal proceedings.

​We offer SAFEPLAN court advocacy in Plymouth District, Plymouth Probate, Wareham District, and Hingham District courts.

Hospital Based Advocacy

We offer counseling and advocacy to people experiencing domestic violence who have sought services at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth. 

Advocates provide crisis intervention, support, and resources to individuals seeking medical attention. Counselors help survivors cope with trauma and reassure them that they are now safe and believed. Also explaining victim’s rights and remind survivors that every step of their care is their choice. 

Transitional Housing

Federally funded by OVW. 

Helping to assist clients in finding and maintaining safe and affordable housing as a transition out of an abusive relationship. 

Also helping to assist with budgeting, resume writing, and workforce development.

Designed to help the individual achieve economic self sufficiency. 

Signs of an unhealthy relationship in your partner

  • Is extremely jealous/possessive and checks on you constantly

  • Tries to control you by making all of the decisions, believing only one person should be in control of the relationship

  • Does not want you to have friends or socialize without partner present

  • Tells you how to dress

  • Calls you names and puts you down

  • Frequently accuses you of unfaithfulness

  • Frightens you by driving recklessly, throwing things, and/org getting in your face during arguments

  • Threatens to harm you, your family, friends, pets, and/or threatens to self harm

  • Pressures you for sex and/or thinks of you as a sex object

  • Blames you when you are mistreated. Says you provoked, pressed buttons, and/or brought this upon yourself

  • Has a history of bad relationships and blames former partners

Providing free, confidential services to family and friends of individuals who have been murdered, were victims of terrorism, or are surviving victims of vehicular homicide in Plymouth and Bristol counties. 

H.E.A.R.T

Healing, Education, Arts, Reconnecting Together

A children’s program of S.H.A.R.E.S providing free, confidential individual and group support, as well as advocacy. 

Services are provided in your community, at one of our offices, or in your home.

Advocacy for those affected by impaired driving.

Providing free and confidential support services to family, friends, witnesses, and survivors who have been affected either directly or indirectly by an incident involving an impaired driver.

Support Groups Offered

Domestic Violence Support Group

Offering in person and virtual options.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Support for grandparents for the life-altering situations of raising a grandchild.

South Shore Alliance of LGBTQ+ Youth (SShAGLY)

A youth led, adult-supervised social group for LGBTQIA+ and ally middle and high school students. Created to give youth a safe and positive place to meet peers and express themselves.

Homicide Bereavement Support Group

Services are offered in your community, at one of our office, or at your home.

To keep yourself safe when preparing to leave an abusive relationship

  • Consult with an advocate from your local domestic violence program, who can inform you of your rights and options

  • Open a bank account in your name, and have the statements sent to a relative or friend.

  • Choose a safe place to go. Choose people who will help you leave. 

  • Purchase a new phone from a domestic violence center.

  • Make copies of important documents, and leave them with a trusted relative or friend.

  • If the abuser has access to weapons, has threatened homicide or suicide, has stalked you, and/or abuses drugs and/or alcohol, you may be in grave danger and are encouraged to seek immediate assistance.
